I have two main difficulties writing in university classes, namely, getting rid of grammar mistakes and writing in a formal style.
Writing a grammatically incorrect, if not, inappropriate passage has been a problem long time ago, simply because that I have been use to communicate with friends in casual English. Other than this, there are also insufficient efforts which have been put in it also. These two reasons apply to my second difficulty as well.
At first, the module of EG 1471 indeed helps me a lot in these two above mentioned areas.
Besides having lectures about them, text editing exercises focusing on all kinds of grammar mistakes like article, subject-verb-agreement and fragment are regularly given to us to practice.
Moreover, we are also required to do writing assignments continuously. These works will be read by my tutor and peers and mistakes will be spotted out. As a result, I have been improving my grammar through all these write-correct processes. Other reading and grammar tasks, which are not compulsory, are also provided online. I tried some of them in my own spare time.
Another useful tool is nothing other than the Microsoft Word. Checking grammar mistakes over lines and pages of words is a tedious job. Certain errors might probably be missed out due carefulness as well. Therefore, I choose to write my assignments using Word. Then there will be always someone there to take care of the basic grammar for me. After seeing plenty of those green or red wave lines and corresponding suggested corrections, I start to be more careful and make less and less similar mistakes.
These methods have been proved to work for me. So in the future, I may stick to what I have done. Furthermore, I will read newspaper more often. I believe I can improve my writing by looking at how other people write properly also in a suitable style.
